Dear All,
What follows is a light-hearted and happy remembrance, one of many I have which center around Aunt Agnes.
My friend, Jude, and I were moving from New York to San Francisco in late June, 1981. I took the opportunity to travel through Kansas, so that I could visit a few relatives. My father, Frank, was at Alfreda's & Wilfric's on the as-yet unnamed Emmeram Road in Ellis County, and, as usual, he was portending disaster and calamity ("if you have to abandon the car,...").
Having thus been saturated with the requisite degree of Teutonic joviality, we departed the following midday and headed west toward an evening's stopover at Oakley.
The house there was brimming with activity. Craig, quiet and observing from afar, took time to explain the perimeter planting of (I think) black walnuts, as a windbreak ("They have tap roots," he explained.). Susan was...how shall I put this?...acting up?...acting out?...well, acting at any rate, with her hair up in giant curlers, a bouffant hairnet or shower cap device, those big sunglasses that clowns wear in circuses, and doing fake ebullient telephone talk on an upside-down receiver. Uncle Gene was hopping around the feedlot, scaring the cattle. "They're frisky tonight!," he related with delight. Mark was esconced deep in thought, apparently reviewing the assassination of The Czar, or somesuch.
Aunt Agnes announced that she had just passed her certification for reflexology, and did I want a treatment? I was game. I laid down prone on the living room carpet, and she went to work. Boy-oh-boy did she go to work. Pummeled my plantars she did. I thought her thumb might go through to the dorsum any moment.
After 40 minutes I asked, "Aunt Agnes, how long does this go on?" She didn't hesitate: "I'm trying to find something wrong with you, but you're too healthy!"
Next morning, amazed to learn no bones had broken, she inquired how I felt and if my feet were alright. Truth be told, they were just fine. They felt...very, very good. I complimented her thorough technique and her diligent application of every reflexology principle that probably ever existed. I said, "Aunt Agnes, I think I could walk to San Francisco, except that I have to start my new job next week, so I think we'll continue our drive."
She was always dear to me, direct, forthright, honest, and she always made me smile.
There's a lot more to say, cousins, but here's the most important: never stop talking to her.
All love and all good thoughts,
Cousin Robert.

Dear family of Agnes Karlin,
I knew your mom when we both lived in Oakley. I meet her through the Church. She was just a kindhearted, fun, intelligent, caring, loving, maybe a little stubborn beautiful woman. We attend many Church functions together including Life in the Spirit Seminars, and the Marion Conferences. She gave me many reflexology treatments and I would attempt to give her one. I moved to Missouri in 2006, and just lost touch with her. But I loved her like a mother.
