Celesta (Sanders) Herl

Celesta (Sanders) Herl, 88, Hays, died Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at Via Christi Village Long Term Care.

She was born September 15, 1929 in St. Peter, Kansas the daughter of Herbert and Loretta (Denning) Sanders.  She was united in marriage to Paul Fitzpatrick and on March 13, 1998 she was united in marriage to Moris Herl at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Phoenix, AZ.  She was a beautician, did graphology, was on the Maricopa County elections board, and was a past-president of the Ladies of Charity at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.  She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Hays and the Daughters of Isabella.  She enjoyed polka dancing with her husband, decorating cakes, coloring pictures, and volunteering at her church in Arizona and at the Community Assistance Center in Hays.

Survivors include her husband; Moris Herl of Hays, a daughter; Corinne Rhae of Scottsdale, AZ, a grandson; Dylan Fitzpatrick, two sisters; Elsie Loevenstein of Quinter and Dinah Werth of Hays, two step-sons; Robert Herl and wife Chris and Tony Herl and wife Laura, all of Quinter, two step-daughters; Faye Herl of Tulsa, OK and Janel Staab and husband Kurt of Hays, ten step-grandchildren; Brittany Leathers, Allison Leathers, Erica Staab, Makenna Herl, Zach Herl, John Staab, Jordan Herl, Bethany Herl, Zane Staab, and Abby Herl.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter; Ramona Fitzpatrick, two sisters; Dolores Emerick and Irma Herl, and a brother; James Sanders.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 1805 Vine Street, Hays, with Fr. Leo Blasi officiating.  Burial will be at 2:30 pm on Tuesday at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Collyer, Kansas.  Visitation will be from 4:00 pm until 8:00 on Monday and from 9:30 am until 10:45 on Tuesday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street.  A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 6:30 pm followed by a parish vigil service at 7:00 pm, both on Monday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested in Celesta’s memory to the Community Assistance Center, Hospice of HaysMed, or to a charity of donor’s choice, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
