John Elwin Huber

John Elwin Huber, 74, Hays, died Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born December 15, 1940 in Hays the son of John A. and Doris (Tecklenberg) Huber.  On June 12, 1971 he married Barbara Jane Krehbiel in Dighton, Kansas.  He was an associate professor of music theory, group piano, and private piano at Fort Hays State University for 45 years.  Prior to teaching at FHSU he taught music at Colby High School for three years.  He earned his Bachelor of Music in music education from FHSU in 1962 and his Master of Music in music theory from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, in 1967.  He twice served as acting chair of the Department of Music and was chair from 1983 until 1987.  He was past chair of the FHSU Traffic Committee, was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Mu Alpha, and was an advisor for Sigma Alpha Iota.  He was collegiate chair and advisor for NAfME, was a member of KMTA and received their hall of fame award, member and state advisor of CMENC, and member of KMEA for which he received a lifetime achievement award.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and was a past member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church.  He received many outstanding teacher awards, outstanding artist performance coordinator awards, was an advisor to the collegiate music fraternities and professional associations, and currently served as advisor to many professional organizations and private music teachers.  He was also the organizer and director of numerous piano clinics and summer piano camps at FHSU.  

Survivors include his wife, of the home in Hays, a son Derek Winston Huber and fiancé Courtney Reed of Athens, TN, a daughter Julinne Annette Kemp and husband Brian of Lawrence, KS, a sister Barbara Widick and husband Chuck of Denver, CO, and five grandchildren Lauren, Ella, Aidon, Aliea, and Rylan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Ann Huber

Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, 305 W. 7th.  Burial will be in the Fort Hays Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hays.  Visitation will be from 9:30 am until service time on Thursday at the church.  Memorials are suggested to the Music Department at Fort Hays State University or to the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
