Robert L. “Bob” Hammerschmidt

Robert L. “Bob” Hammerschmidt, 58, Hays, died Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas.

He was born March 24, 1956 in Seneca, Kansas the son of Joseph and Louise (Miller) Hammerschmidt.  He graduated from Natoma High School in 1974, and received his associate’s degree from Colby Community College.  He then studied HVAC at Beloit Vo-Tech in Beloit, Kansas.  On May 11, 1991 he married Patricia McGinnis in Hays, Kansas.  He was a custodian and maintenance man at Victoria High School.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hays, and the Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council #1867 of Victoria.  He loved fishing and hunting, loved to barbecue, was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, and loved spending time with his family, especially his son Ryan.

Survivors include his wife, of the home, son Ryan Hammerschmidt of Hays, his mother Louise Hammerschmidt of Victoria, brother Ronald Hammerschmidt and wife Mary of Topeka and a sister Mary Beth Green and husband Ronald of Lawrence.  

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother Donald J. Hammerschmidt.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 19, 2015 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 215 W. 13th.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 pm on Sunday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Monday, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine.  A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm followed by a Victoria Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:00, both on Sunday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society of the High Plains, in care of the funeral home.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
