Rose Lucille (Huckstep) Schukman

Rose Lucille Schnatterly-Schukman, 95,  born Feb. 18, 1916 in Lewis, Kansas, passed away January 20, 2012 at the Hays Medical Center. She was blessed to live a very full life. She was a graduate of Lewis High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Harry L Schnatterly, in 1934. They ran a family grocery store in Kinsley, Kansas, until Harry enlisted in the army in 1944 during WWII. After Harry returned from the war he became District Manager for State Farm Insurance and they moved to Hays in 1950. Harry passed away Feb. 5, 1968, after over 30 years of marriage.
In 1974 she married Charles Schukman, with whom she loved to go camping and fishing. Charlie passed away in 1999.
Lucille was very active in the Methodist Church circles and Federated Woman's Club. She loved to entertain and did so frequently. She also enjoyed making costumes for her daughters and friends for ballet and music recitals. That led to a business selling knitting machines. She wrote and sold a manual on the machines that made them easier to use.
In the 1950s, she surprised the town of Hays when she helped bring a carnival from Kinsley as a money maker for Hays High School.
Lucille has been a resident of Hays Good Samaritan Center for the past 10 years. She enjoyed participating in the activities, especially bingo, at the center. Music was always a huge part of her life. She loved taking piano lessons and playing music for silent movies as a young lady. Later, she enjoyed playing music on her keyboard for the residents of Hays Good Samaritan Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Esther (Pierce) Huckstep, husbands Harry Schnatterly and Charles Schukman, two sons, Lee Schnatterly and Ernest Eugene Schnatterly, and one grandson, Clifford Dinges.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty (Leroy) Dinges of Hays, Sally (Carl) Lomax of Macomb, Ill., and Mary (Feltes) Boyer-Webber of Redmond, Ore., one son, Arthur (Martha) Schnatterly of Grover, Mo., and her two best friends, Janice Goff of Hays and Donna Weaverling of Hays who were always at her side during her last years.
She was blessed with 17 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and 1 great-great-great-grandchild.
Cremation Rites have been accorded by Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held in February at the Hays Good Samaritan Center. Graveside services will be held in Kinsley in the spring. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
