Dale Logan Akers

Dale Logan Akers, 92, Hays, died Thursday, January 25, 2024 at HaysMed.

He was born January 2, 1932 in Hays, the son of Carney L. and Florence L. (Altman) Akers.  He was united in marriage to Marjorie Joy “Marge” Akers on December 29, 1951 in Garnett, Kansas, and they celebrated 67 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on June 18, 2019.  Dale was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Austria during the Korean War and in Europe after the war.  He was the physical plant director at Fort Hays State University for 40 years, retiring in 1991.  Dale was a talented woodworker, metal crafter, and a master electrician and plumber, learning skills that would help him be a master leader of men.  His memberships included the First United Methodist Church, Hays VFW Post #9076, Hays American Legion Post #173, and he was an assistant leader for Boy Scout Troop #101.  In his youth, Dale rode his horse to school and after his retirement he enjoyed horseback riding in Colorado.  He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to the lake, and camping with his wife Marge.

Survivors include his son, Col. Gregory Akers and wife Jaye J. of Russell, his daughter, Debbie Moeckel and husband Doug of Topeka, a brother, Glenn Akers of Lebanon, Missouri, four grandchildren, Stuart Moeckel and wife Summer of Eudora, Benjamin Moeckel and wife Lindsey of Eudora, Jacob Akers and wife Casey Kilpatrick of Ann Arbor, MI, Sarah Stilling and husband Ross of Annandale, VA, six great grandchildren, Brennan Moeckel, Braxton Moeckel, Brantley Moeckel, Sophia Moeckel, Holden Stilling, and Quinn Stilling, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Marge, a brother, Kenneth Akers, and his sister, Lorena Nulton.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, February 2, 2024 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  Private family inurnment will be in the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery in WaKeeney with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Thursday and from 9:30 am until service time on Friday, all at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to the Cedar Bluff South Shore Cabin Association.  Condolences and memories of Dale may be left for his family at www.haysmemorial.com
