Dorothy Hildegard (Legleiter) (Petrik) McCollum

Dorothy Hildegard (Legleiter) (Petrik) McCollum, 91, formerly of Hays, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2021, at the Newton Presbyterian Manor in Newton, Kansas.

Dorothy was born in rural Liebenthal, Kansas on February 1, 1930, the first of fourteen children born to Anton and Genevieve (Schaffer) Legleiter.  She spent her childhood on the family farm east of Liebenthal, Kansas.  She married Wayne Petrik in Liebenthal, Kansas.  They made their home in Rush County where they farmed and raised livestock.  To this union, five children were born.  They later divorced. Dorothy married William (Bill) McCollum in Miami, Oklahoma.  They lived in Hays and Andover, Kansas during their early marriage, before returning to Hays. Bill preceded her in death in 1997.  She remained in her home in Hays until her health required her to move in with her daughter, Shirley, in Valley Center, Kansas in 2015. In 2018, she moved to assisted living in the Newton Presbyterian Manor.  Dorothy worked at Travenol in Hays and at Beach Aircraft in Wichita.  After retirement, she took great pride in maintaining her home, yard and garden on Indian Trail in Hays. She enjoyed sitting on her deck and watching the purple martins.  She also enjoyed dancing and attended many dances in Ellis and surrounding counties.

Survivors include five children: Shirley (Ray) Orr of Valley Center, Charles (Helen) Petrik of Manhattan, Randy Petrik of Colorado Springs, Julie Petrik of Wichita, and Robert Petrik of Wichita, 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, four brothers: Miles (Janie) Legleiter of Hays, Harry (Patty) Legleiter of Hays, Dennis (Carol) Legleiter of Gorham, Walter Legleiter of Hays, two sisters: Germaine Degenhardt of Hays, and Patty (Gary) Rohr of Hays, two sisters-in-law: Carol Legleiter of Hays and Leota Legleiter of Great Bend, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister: Virginia, and six brothers: Gerald, Tony, LeeRoy, Donald, Fritz, and Melvin.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Tuesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Wednesday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested and payable to: Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the Newton Presbyterian Manor, or to Good Shepherd Hospice, Newton, Kansas.  Condolences and memories of Dorothy may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
