James M. “Jim” Steinert

James M. “Jim” Steinert, 67, Plainville, died Friday, January 7, 2022 at HaysMed.

He was born July 26, 1954 in Russell, the son of Marvin and Dora Lee (Mai) Steinert.  Jim graduated from Norton High School in 1972 and studied criminal justice at Fort Hays State University.  He was a police officer in Ellis and owned and operated Steinert Liquor for more than 30 years.  He was in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1972 to 1976.  On July 26, 2016, Jim was united in marriage to Shirley A. Rempe in Las Vegas, Nevada.  His memberships included the National Hot Rod Association, Patriot Guard, Vietnam Veterans of America, and the Disabled American Veterans.  He was active in the Masons and Shriners, and for many years was a member of the Hays First United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed racing and fixing cars, hot rods, Harley Davidson motorcycles, car shows, hunting, and golf.  Jim was an avid sports fan and a Kansas City Chiefs season ticket holder.  Most of all, he loved his family.

Survivors include his wife: Shirley of the home, a daughter: Marcie Steinert and partner Kevin Parker, Sr. of Springfield, MO, mother-in-law: Vera Jane Glick of Plainville, a stepson: Stuart Rempe of Plainville, a stepdaughter: Makenzi Johnson and husband Chris of Garden City, a brother: Terry Steinert and wife Nancy of Erie, a sister: Mary Ward and husband Jim of Minot, ND, five grandchildren: Kevin Parker, Jr., Kaydence Parker, Ky’Leigh Parker, Khilaya Parker, and Talon Hobdell, three brothers-in-law: Don Glick and Verlene LeRock of Zurich, Fred Glick and wife Paula of Plainville, and Rodger Glick and wife Geri of Parker, CO, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son: Michael Steinert, a daughter: Rebecca Steinert, and a sister: Barbara Steinert.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, January 18, 2022 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  Inurnment will follow in Mt. Allen Cemetery with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until service time at the funeral home.  They encourage all to come dressed casually, reflecting Jim’s interests and all he loved, and in his memory, consider “paying it forward” by giving to those who might best receive the gift you have to give.  Condolences and memories of Jim may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
