Jean Berland

Jean Berland, 93, Hays, died Monday, March 21, 2022 at Homestead of Hays.

She was born March 19, 1929 in Hays, the daughter of Hugh and Zelma (Marcotte) Meade.  She graduated from Palco High School in the class of 1947 then attended Kansas State University.  On February 18, 1949 she was united in marriage to LeRoy Edwin Berland in Zurich, and they were married 59 years before he preceded her in death on February 20, 2008.  For many years she was the secretary at Palco High School before going back to college to earn a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Fort Hays State University.  She taught second grade in Natoma for two years then in Plainville for many years until her retirement.  Her memberships included St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church and P.E.O.  Jean was active in the church and had a strong devotion to Mary and praying the rosary.  She enjoyed weekends at the lake, water skiing, traveling, winters in Arizona, and was a loyal K-State fan.  Her family meant everything to her and she enjoyed attending her grandsons’ sporting events.  Jean possessed a gentle nature, never complained, and was loved by everyone.

Survivors include her son: Craig Berland and wife Bonnie of Chandler, AZ, two daughters: Joni Jackson and husband Stan of Hays and Renee Jackson and husband Rick of Hill City, nine grandsons and 19 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband LeRoy, two brothers: Marion and Harlan Meade, and a sister: Dorene Sleichter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church with Fr. Damian Richards officiating.  Burial will follow in Pleasantview Cemetery, Palco.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 7:00 on Friday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home and from 9:00 am until service time on Saturday at the church.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church.  Condolences and memories of Jean may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
