Jerel “Jerry” A. Ubert

Jerel “Jerry” A. Ubert, 71, Hays, died Monday, September 7, 2020 at his home surrounded by family.

He was born February 15, 1949 in Hays, Kansas, the son of Alphonse J. and Anna Marie “Emma” (Brungardt) Ubert.  He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Military Academy and Fort Hays State University.  Jerry was a United States Army Veteran, serving as a Senior Records Specialist handling Officers’ records while stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.  On August 20, 1976 he was united in marriage to Kathy Doughty in Stockton, and they celebrated 44 years of marriage.  Jerry worked at various positions upon his return from military duty, including Ellis County Deputy Treasurer, Hays State Bank, and James Motor Company.  He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, serving on the church committee and was very involved in the community serving as President of the Hays City Softball Association.  He was board member, President, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Hays Bowling Association, and in 1999 was elected to the Hays Bowling Association Hall of Fame.  He was a member of the Hays American Legion Post #173, serving as Post Adjutant and American Legion State Softball Chairman. 

Jerry was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Hays since 1982, serving as Past Club President, Past Lt. Governor, Past Governor-Elect, and Past Governor of the Kansas District of Kiwanis.  He received the James W. Putnam Award, George F. Hixson Award, Walter Zeller Award, Centennial Award, was a Legion of Honor Recipient, and in 2003 was named District Kiwanian of the Year.  In addition to serving on a number of club committees, he chaired numerous projects, including co-chairing the Kiwanis Flag Project.  In 2003 he received the Hays All-American Citizen Award, and in 2017 the Hays Area Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame Award.

Survivors include his wife Kathy of the home, two sons; Kevin Ubert and wife Kylie and Keith Ubert, all of Hays, a brother; Darrell Ubert and wife Arlene, and a sister; Carol Koerner, all of Wichita, two granddaughters; Kynlie and Colbye Ubert, and seven nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, September 11, 2020 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. Nick Parker officiating.  Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post #9076 Honor Guard and the Fort Riley Funeral Detail will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 pm until 8:00 on Thursday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Friday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to Hospice of HaysMed and the Kiwanis Club of Hays Flag Project.  Condolences and memories of Jerry may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
