Robert E. “Bob” McQuilliam

Robert E. “Bob” McQuilliam, 82, Hays died Sunday, December 19, 2021 at his home surrounded by family.

He was born December 15, 1939 in Hutchinson, the son of Lloyd and Dorothy (Scheele) McQuilliam.  In 1957 he graduated from Hutchinson High School.  He served in the National Guard.  From the age of 16, Bob worked in the flour milling industry, retiring in 1995.  After his retirement, he was a bus driver for USD 489 and earned the honor of Employee of the Year his first year.  On November 18, 1995 he was united in marriage to Susan S. “Sue” Leuck in Hays, and they were married 26 years.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and for a short time was on the Pro Bowling Circuit.  Bob loved his ‘57 Chevy, which was his pride and joy.  He was known to be frugal when shopping and enjoyed fishing and traveling with Sue.

Survivors include his wife Sue of Hays, son: Michael McQuilliam and wife Kerryn of Lindsborg, daughter: Kristine Jackman and husband Doug of Chicago, IL, son-in-law: JT Penner of Newton, three sisters: Nancy Costigan-Talbott and husband Bill of Hays, Judy Anderson and husband Phil of Loveland, CO, and Sue Oglesby of Wichita, six grandchildren: Jon Penner, Anyssa Pepe, Andrew Jackman, Abigail Jackman, Camden McQuilliam, and Kinnon McQuilliam, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Tanya Penner, and two brothers: Lloyd Frank and David McQuilliam.  

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 23, 2021 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Andy Hammeke officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 on Wednesday and from 9:00 am until 9:45 on Thursday, all at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  A vigil service and rosary will be at 7:00 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Joseph Food Pantry.  Condolences and memories of Bob may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
