Sophie K. Staab, 91, Hays, died Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at Via Christi Village.

She was born June 3, 1928 in Hyacinth, the daughter of John and Agnes (Korbe) Fross.  She attended Girls Catholic High School.  On June 30, 1947 she was united in marriage to Clarence H. Dreiling, and they celebrated 20 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 11, 1967.  On November 4, 1972 she was united in marriage to Alfred “Allie” Staab, and they celebrated 26 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on December 23, 1998.  She was a hairdresser and clerk at several businesses in Hays.  Sophie was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church and St. Catherine Altar Society Christian Mothers.  She took pride in caring for her lawn and doing yardwork, and was always delighted to feed her farm cats.  She enjoyed word searches, watching soap operas and western movies, and listening to country music.

Survivors include a daughter; Sue Younger and husband Marlin of McPherson, two step-sons; Dennis Staab and wife Marla and Jerry Staab and wife Sharon, all of Hays, a daughter-law; Sheryl Dreiling of Hays, 19 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren; Melissa Messerli and husband Dan of Shawnee and their son Eli, Dustin Younger and wife Tara of McPherson and their children Peyton, Krew, Beckett and Teigan, Darin Dreiling and wife Kriste of Great Bend and their daughters Aliya and Kaitlyn, Doug Dreiling and wife Lindsey of Hays and their children Dylan, Elle, Beau, and Colton, Kim Griffith and husband Troy of Tumwater, WA and their children Kaily, Connor, and Braden, BJ Staab and wife Tracy of Kearney, MO and their children Jackson, Will, and Laken, Katie Holecek and husband Brian of Shawnee and their children Elsie and Brady, Adam Staab of Wichita, Curtis Staab and wife Beth of Lansdale, PA and their children Ryan, Collin, and Trevor, Sarabeth Verbeck and husband Todd of Wichita and their son Cody, and Erin, Daesha, Heather, Holly, Annie, Heidi, Audrey, Denissa, and Jessica, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Clarence and Allie, two sons; David and Dennis Dreiling,  four brothers; Henry, Rudy, Clarence, and George Fross, and four sisters; Josephine Fross, Louise Dreher, Martina Switzer, and Florence Hancock.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Catharine.  Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Hays.  Family will receive friends from 9:00 am until 10:00 on Saturday at the church.  Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine Church or to TMP-Marian High School, in care of Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home.  Condolences and memories of Sophie may be shared with the family at www.haysmemorial.com
