Viola Engel, 91, Hays, died Monday, January 30, 2023 at Hays Good Samaritan Society.
She was born January 21, 1932 in Codell, Kansas the daughter of Ralph and Mabel (Kreutzer) Dougherty. In 1949 she graduated from Codell High School and on August 19, 1950 she was united in marriage to Victor F. “Vic” Engel in Hays. He preceded her in death on January 3, 1989. Viola was a CNA at St. Anthony Hospital in Hays and at Logan County Hospital in Oakley. She enjoyed bowling, bingo, pinochle, Patsy Cline and Elvis music, and most of all, spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Robben and Lois Augustine (Ralph), all of Hays, a son, Steven Engel (Robin) of Hays, fifteen grandchildren, Tanya Schwarz (Todd), Misty Gawith (Scott), Jenny Spear (Mike), Trevor Engel, Jennifer Ratliff (Travis), Eric Engel (Jamie), Kelli Engel, Connie Engel, Michael Engel, Christina Staab (Chad), Laura Engel, Kacie Engel, Renee Seltmann, Ryan Augustine (Rachel), and Rachel Pattillo, twelve great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and her former daughter-in-law: Carol Landis of Quinter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Victor, two sons Clifford and Dennis Engel, two brothers Aaron and Frank Dougherty, three sisters, LaVonne Naylor, Juanita Sprague, and Louella Blakesley, a son-in-law Larry Robben, and a grandson Eric Robben.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine Street, with Fr. Richard Daise officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 pm on Friday and from 9:00 am until service time on Saturday, all at the funeral home. A vigil service and rosary will be at 6:30 pm on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of HaysMed.
